Assumptions and formula
CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester SGPAs: Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits. With no credits entered, every semester counts the same. The percentage uses the CBSE indicative rule, 9.5 × CGPA (Circular 24/2010), or your university’s formula written as (CGPA + offset) × multiplier.
Universities set their own CGPA-to-percentage conversions, and websites quote different formulas for the same university without a source, so this page offers only the CBSE rule as a preset. Find your university’s formula in its regulations or on your transcript and enter it as a multiplier and an offset: for example, (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 is a multiplier of 10 and an offset of −0.75. A percentage is converted back by percentage ÷ multiplier − offset.
Worked example
Semesters of 8.0 over 20 credits and 9.0 over 25 credits give a CGPA of (160 + 225) ÷ 45 = 8.56. By the CBSE rule that is about 81.3%. A CGPA of 7.8 is 74.1%, and 76% is a CGPA of 8.0.
CGPA to percentage
CGPA converted to a percentage by the CBSE method the calculator uses: multiply the CGPA by 9.5.
| CGPA (out of 10) | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 6.0 | 57.0% |
| 6.5 | 61.8% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% |
| 7.5 | 71.3% |
| 8.0 | 76.0% |
| 8.5 | 80.8% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% |
| 9.5 | 90.3% |
| 10.0 | 95.0% |
The 9.5 multiplier comes from CBSE, which based it on the average performance of students across years. Many universities use their own formula, such as (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 or (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and some say plainly that CGPA should not be converted at all. Always check the formula your university or the employer asking for a percentage expects.
CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester grade points, so a high grade in a four-credit course lifts it more than the same grade in a two-credit course.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the CBSE multiplier for a university that has its own formula. Check the official conversion rule before writing a percentage on an application.
- Averaging semester CGPAs without credits. If semesters carry different credits, a simple average gives the wrong overall figure.
- Rounding too early. Keep two decimal places until the final step.
Frequently asked questions
What is 8 CGPA in percentage?
76% by the CBSE rule, 9.5 × CGPA. Universities use their own formulas, so check your university’s regulations; with (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, for example, 8 is 72.5%.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
For CBSE, multiply by 9.5: a CGPA of 7.8 is about 74.1%. CBSE calls this an indicative percentage (Circular 24/2010). Universities set their own formulas, and different websites quote different ones for the same university, so use the formula on your university’s circular or transcript; this calculator takes it as a multiplier and an offset.
How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. 8.0 over 20 credits and 9.0 over 25 credits gives (160 + 225) ÷ 45 = 8.56, not the 8.5 you get by averaging the two, because the second semester carries more credits.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Reverse the same formula. With the CBSE rule, divide the percentage by 9.5: 76% is a CGPA of 8.0. With a university formula of (CGPA + offset) × multiplier, CGPA = percentage ÷ multiplier − offset.
Why do CGPA to percentage calculators disagree?
Because they apply different formulas and rarely say which. The 9.5 rule is CBSE’s; universities use their own, and the same university appears with different formulas on different sites. The only reliable figure is the one in your university’s own regulations.
Is this a CGPA calculator for any university?
Yes. As a CGPA calculator it works out your cumulative grade point average on a 10-point scale from SGPA to CGPA for any university, and as a CGPA to percentage calculator it applies the CBSE rule or your university’s own formula; it also converts percentage to CGPA.
Is this a CGPA converter?
Yes: a CGPA converter for percentage and back. A CGPA score is your average grade point across all semesters, so the calculator works as a CGPA calculator for all semesters as well.
