Assumptions and formula
Duration arithmetic converts every term to seconds and applies multiplication and division before addition and subtraction, then reports the answer as a clock duration, as hours and minutes, and as decimal hours. Between two moments reads each date and time in its own timezone, using that zone’s rules on that date. The timesheet totals each row less its break, counts daily overtime first and then weekly overtime, and never counts the same hour twice.
Elapsed time is reported twice: wall-clock, as the two readings differ on the clock, and absolute, the physical time that passed. The two diverge across a daylight-saving transition and between zones, and the page names the shift rather than picking one figure silently.
Worked example
8h 30m × 5 is 42 hours 30 minutes: 42:30:00, or 42.5 decimal hours. From noon on 7 March 2026 to noon on 9 March in New York is 48 hours by the clock but 47 hours of elapsed time, because the clocks went forward on 8 March.
Minutes to decimal hours
Timesheets and payroll often record time as decimal hours. Divide minutes by 60 to convert: 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 5 minutes | 0.08 |
| 6 minutes | 0.10 |
| 10 minutes | 0.17 |
| 12 minutes | 0.20 |
| 15 minutes | 0.25 |
| 20 minutes | 0.33 |
| 30 minutes | 0.50 |
| 40 minutes | 0.67 |
| 45 minutes | 0.75 |
| 50 minutes | 0.83 |
A common mistake is to write 7 hours 30 minutes as 7.30. In decimal hours it is 7.5, and paying 7.30 hours undercounts by 12 minutes. When adding up times by hand, add hours and minutes separately and carry every 60 minutes into an hour.
When a period crosses midnight, add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting: a shift from 10:00 pm to 6:30 am is 30:30 minus 22:00, which is 8 hours 30 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How does a time clock calculator add up hours and minutes on a time card?
Convert each shift to minutes, add them, then turn the total back into hours and minutes: a 7:45 shift and an 8:20 shift are 465 + 500 = 965 minutes, which is 16 hours and 5 minutes. Payroll usually needs decimal hours, so divide the minutes by 60 instead: 16.08 hours. Breaks are subtracted before the total, and many employers round each punch to the nearest quarter hour, which can move the result by a few minutes either way. This time clock calculator does all of that for a full week and shows overtime once the hours cross the threshold you set. The same tool works as a time duration calculator between two clock times, an add time calculator for stacking durations, and an hours and minutes calculator for anything that will not divide neatly by 60. For work hours, the Timesheet mode is a time sheet calculator and work hours calculator: start, finish and break for each day, with the week’s total and daily overtime. The Between two moments mode is a time difference calculator for any two dates and times. As a clock hours calculator or employee hours calculator it totals each worker’s week the same way, and as a time to time calculator it gives the hours between any two clock times. Use the timesheet mode as a time card or work hours calculator: enter clock-in and clock-out times and breaks, and it totals the hours worked, the overtime at time and a half, and the pay.
Why does one time duration calculator disagree with another about how many hours passed?
Usually daylight saving. Noon on 7 March 2026 to noon on 9 March 2026 in New York is 48 hours on the clock but 47 hours of elapsed time, because spring forward removes an hour nobody lives through. Both answers are correct and they answer different questions, so this page reports both and names which is which. To calculate your hours worked, use the time card mode as a free online timesheet calculator: enter each day’s clock-in and clock-out times and breaks for weekly totals and overtime. Short rest breaks of about 20 minutes or less are usually paid working time under US federal rules, so deduct only meal breaks of 30 minutes or more.
